Lyrics of
Under The Milky Way

Under the Milky Way is a song by the Australian band The Church, released as the lead single from their fifth studio album, Starfish, in 1988. The song was co-written by lead singer and bass guitarist Steve Kilbey and his then-girlfriend Karin Jansson (of Curious (Yellow)). According to Kilbey, the song was written quite quickly, driven by the need to complete the album. Kilbey mentioned that he used a drum machine, came up with some chord sequen ... ces, and, inspired by the sound, wrote the lyrics, which evoke nighttime imagery and introspective reflections. The phrase Under the Milky Way refers both to a feeling of contemplation under the Milky Way and can be interpreted as a play on the word milquetoast, indicating a gentle or meek nature. Sometimes when this place gets kind of empty
The sound of their breath fades with the light
I think about the loveless fascination
Under the Milky Way tonight

Lower the curtain down on Memphis
Lower the curtain down alright
I've got no time for private consultation
Under the milky way tonight

Wish I knew what you were looking for
Might have known what you would find

And it's something quite peculiar
Something shimmering and white
It leads you here despite your destination
Under the milky way tonight

Wish I knew what you were looking for
Might have known what you would find
Wish I knew what you were looking for
Might have known what you would find

And it's something quite peculiar
Something shimmering and white
It leads you here despite your destination
Under the milky way tonight

Wish I knew what you were looking for
Might have known what you would find
Wish I knew what you were looking for
Might have known what you would find

Under the milky way tonight
Under the milky way tonight
Under the milky way tonight
(Repeat and fade)
