Lyrics of
I Heard It Through The Grapevine

I Heard It Through the Grapevine was composed by Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong in the late 1960s. Initially recorded by Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, it was Marvin Gayes version in 1968 that brought it fame. The song talks about the pain and betrayal felt upon finding out from others, rather than directly, that ones love is being unfaithful. The use of the phrase through the grapevine refers to getting information through gossip or rumors ... . It was one of Motown Records biggest hits and has been covered numerous times. See more [+]

Ooh, I bet you're wonderin' how I knew,
'Bout your plans to make me blue.
With some other guy you knew be-fore,
Between two of us guys, you know I loved you more.

It took me by sur-prise, I must say,
When I found out yester-day. Don't you know that;

I heard it through the grape-vine;
Not much longer, would you be mine.
Oh, I heard it through the grape-vine;
Oh, I'm just about to lose my mind, honey, honey, yeah.

(I heard it through the grapevine,
Not much longer would you be my baby).

I know a man ain't sup-posed to cry,
But these tears, I can't hold in-side.
Losing you, would end my life, you see,
'Cos you mean that much to me.

You could have told me your-self,
That you loved someone else.

Instead, I heard it through the grape-vine;
Not much longer would you be mine.
Oh, I heard it through the grape-vine;
Oh, I'm just about to lose my mind, honey, honey, yeah.

(I heard it through the grapevine,
Not much longer would you be my baby).

People say; believe half of what you see,
Son, and none of what you hear.
But I can't help, but be confused,
If it's true, please tell me, dear.

Do you plan to let me go,
For the other guy you loved be-fore?

I heard it through the grape-vine;
Not much longer, would you be mine.
Oh, I heard it through the grape-vine;
Oh, I'm just about to lose my mind, honey, honey, yeah.

(I heard it through the grapevine,
Not much longer would you be my baby).
(Repeat to Fade)
