A música I Shot the Sheriff foi escrita por Bob Marley e fala sobre a repressão e a injustiça sofrida pelos negros na época. A letra conta a história de um homem que admite ter atirado no xerife, mas nega ter atirado no delegado. A canção foi interpretada como uma metáfora para a luta contra o opressivo sistema colonial e policial na Jamaica. Marley explicou que a letra também reflete conflitos pessoais e a defesa da autodefesa
