That Santa Fe still blows the whistle
But it doesn’t stop in town much anymore
It’s been so long I can’t remember what it ever stopped here for
I used to stand out by the crossing
And watch other people get on
Then I’d wait there alone until that train was gone
I think all trains carry secrets
That only the passengers know
I’d get on board if I could
But I’ve run out of places to go
Chasing trains that won’t take me home
I’ve given good years to the work life
I’ve given my children a chance
I try my best but someday I know it’s all out of my hands
You can only live so long on daydreams
You can only go so far on faith
But sometimes when I close my eyes I can still see that train
I think all trains carry secrets
That only the passengers know
I’d get on board if I could
But I gave up a long time ago
Chasing trains that won’t take me home
Every now and then
I still remember when
This morning I walked to the station
And stood all alone by the tracks
Just like I’d done before, except this time my bags were packed
I must have stood there for hours
But the train never came in
So I left my suitcase behind, and I’m not going back again
I think all trains carry secrets
That only the passengers know
I’d get on board if I could
But I think that it's time to let go
Chasing trains
Chasing trains
Chasing trains that won't take me home
