Hunger Strike fue creada durante las sesiones de grabación del único álbum de Temple of the Dog, una banda que se formó en tributo a Andrew Wood, el cantante principal de Mother Love Bone que murió de una sobredosis de heroína. La canción se hizo famosa por presentar un dueto entre Chris Cornell y Eddie Vedder, quien estaba comenzando su carrera con Pearl Jam en ese momento.
