The Blessing was inspired by a Biblical benediction from Numbers 6:24-26. It was written during a conference at Elevation Church in North Carolina, USA. Kari Jobe and Cody Carnes, who were attending the conference, collaborated with Steven Furtick and Chris Brown of Elevation Worship to write the song as a statement of faith and encouragement during uncertain times, notably during the COVID-19 pandemic.
