California Stars is based on an unfinished lyric by Woody Guthrie, an iconic figure in American folk music. The melody was later composed by Jay Bennett and Jeff Tweedy, members of the band Wilco, as part of the Mermaid Avenue project, which aimed to put music to a series of unpublished Guthrie lyrics.
