The healthy oak was strong and tall
Her branches reached for sky
Till a maple tree with blighted leaves
Came into her life
At first the Maple seemed so strong
But in his trunk, was dark and wrong
His roots were twisted, deep and cold
Leaves were shriveled, bark was old
The oak tree she once stood so proud
But now she’s wilting, falling down
Her leaves are yellow, fading fast
Her branches bare, she cannot last
The blighted tree, the blighted tree
He’s spreading his disease
Poisoning the healthy oak
And leaving her in mi-ser-y
The blighted tree, the blighted tree
He’s spreading his disease
Sickening the forest
And killing off the trees
A sturdy elm sprouts next to oak,
And sees that she is being choked,
She leans on him, their limbs entwine
He lends strength as her health declines
But Oak is also deeply tangled
With Maple’s poisoned sap,
Her branches must be trimmed from him
Before her trunk is snapped.
Oak needs to prune herself away
But thinks the pain will never fade
She’s shared his roots for many years
And not sure she can face her fears
Elm knows that Oak has been affected
By the maple tree infected.
Oak grips both and poisons Elm.
And soon they’ll all be overwhelmed.
The blighted tree, the blighted tree
He’s spreading his disease
Poisoning the healthy oak
And leaving her in mi-ser-y
The blighted tree, the blighted tree
He’s spreading his disease
Sickening the forest
And killing off the trees
Oak decomposed, she never let go
Of her toxic mate.
Elm shed his leaves to blanket her,
And timber was his fate.
