Defying Gravity is a song from the musical Wicked, which is based on the book Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire. The musical, with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and book by Winnie Holzman, debuted in 2003. The song is a duet between Elphaba (the Wicked Witch of the West) and Glinda as Elphaba decides to defy the societal constraints put upon her and fly into her own freedom and power.
