Mercedes Benz was composed by Janis Joplin, Michael McClure, and Bob Neuwirth. Inspired by an experience Joplin had in a bar, where McClure wrote the initial lines on a napkin after seeing an advertisement of Mercedes-Benz. Janis added more lines, making the song an ironic commentary on societys materialism. It was one of the last recordings of Joplin before her death in 1970.
