John Newton was an English Anglican clergyman and abolitionist who was forced to serve as a sailor in the Royal Navy for a period. After leaving the navy, he became involved in the Atlantic slave trade. In 1748, a conversion experience led him to abandon his slave-trading activities, and he later advocated for the abolition of slavery. He is also known for composing the hymn Amazing Grace.
