Verse
As I roved out one fine summer's morn
Amang lofty hills, moorland and mountain
It was there I spied a weel faurt maid
As I, wi' others, was oot a-hunting
Verse
No shoes nor stocking's did she wear
And neither had she cap nor feather
But her golden hair hung in ringlets fair
An' the gentle breeze played round her shoulders
Verse
I said, ?Braw lassie, why roam ye alone
Why roam ye lane amang the heather??
She says, ?My faither's awa frae hame
An' I'm herdin' a' his yowes taegither?
Verse
I said, ?Braw lassie, if you'll be mine
And care tae lie on a bed o' feather
In silks an' satins you will shine
And you'll be my queen amang the heather?
Verse
She said, ?Kind sir, your offers good
Ah, but I'm afraid 'twas meant for laughter
For I see you are some rich squire's son
And I am but a poor shepherd's daughter?
Verse
?Ah, but had ye been a shepherd loon
Or had ye been a ploughman's son
Wi' a' my hert, I would hae lo'ed ye?
Verse
Now I've been tae halls an' I've been tae balls
I hae been to London and Balquhidder
But the bonniest lass that e'er I have saw
She was herdin' yowes amang the heather
Verse
So we both sat doon upon the plain
We sat awhile an' we talked taegether
An' we left the yowes tae stray their lane
Till I lo'ed my Queen amang the heather
